Time Magazine contract photographer Callie Shell has documented the remarkable journey of President Barack Obama for the last three years. Her intimate reportage began in 2006 before he was a candidate, when his traveling party numbered just three people in a car: the driver, Obama and Shell.

Few gave him a chance when he entered the Presidential race eventually becoming the United State’s first African-American President.

Her work is not just about access, but rather the product of a relationship built on mutual respect and trust. This is her fifth presidential campaign.

Callie was the official photographer at the White House for Vice-President Al Gore throughout his eight-year term.

Her work at the White House was like that of a “photographic historian,” documenting three political campaigns, one impeachment, numerous state dinners and some 50 000 handshakes.

Callie Shell’s work has been published extensively, in magazines, newspapers and books around the world.
