Schapiro went with James Baldwin through the American South and traveled with Bobby Kennedy during his presidential campaign. He covered the New York art scene, documenting Andy Warhol's Factory, and did essays on the hippie and protest movements. One of his first stories was on the Apollo Theatre in Harlem.

His pictures reveal the diversity of American life, the increasing disparity between the rich and the poor, racial and class conflicts, and a burgeoning American middle class and its materialistic desires.

This exhibit and the recently published book "American Edge" reflect his work from that time.
