A Nation Decides
Julia Demaree-Nikhinson
This photo exhibition offers a visual chronicle of the 2024 U.S. presidential election, a race that pitted former President Donald Trump against Vice President Kamala Harris in what became one of the most consequential and polarizing contests in modern American history. For the first time in U.S. history, a former president sought a non-consecutive second term, facing off against the first woman of color to be nominated by a major political party. Against a backdrop of deepening polarization, misinformation, and rising authoritarian currents worldwide, the stakes of this election reverberated far beyond the United States.
The campaign trail revealed a country that is becoming increasingly fractured. Political identity in 2024 had become deeply personal, interwoven with everyday life, culture, and community. Supporters didn’t just rally behind policies; they aligned with visions of identity, power, and belonging. For many, the election became a referendum not just on leadership, but on the meaning of American democracy itself.
