Since 1979 I have been a contract photographer for Time Magazine. Much of that time I have been one of Time’s White House photographers.  The pictures of mine shown here at Perpignan are of two kinds: a selection of color images taken alongside the rest of the White House press corps, working as a pack as we rush from photo op to photo op, in and out of press areas delineated by ropes and stanchions, on and off press planes, pool cars, buses or Air Force One.

The other images are those taken of the Presidents “behind the scenes,” when Time has requested permission for me to be where other photographers are not.

These pictures are views of the Presidents, with cabinet, staff, or families, away from the public glare of lights and mikes, which hopefully show us more about who these American leaders are. Although no one in the press is ever invisible to the White House, these photographs I believe are as close as a photojournalist can get to what is truly real about those who have held this office.

Some of these images and many more will appear in my upcoming book, Public & Private, Twenty Years Photographing the White House, to be published by National Geographic Insight Books, October 2002.
