Ten years after the fall of its caliphate in the Middle East, Islamic State has discretely rebuilt its forces in an arid, rugged region of northern Somalia. A remarkable Washington Post investigation revealed the scale of the conflict in the remote provinces of one of the world’s poorest countries. As a photojournalist for the newspaper, Carolyn Van Houten was able to follow the Somali army as they hunted Islamic combatants all the way to the caves that were recently discovered in Puntland.
