American Madness
Adam Gray
According to a poll conducted before the November 2024 U.S. presidential election, 80% of respondents considered that the country was divided on fundamental values. It is unlikely that Donald Trump’s return to the White House will have tempered this feeling. Everyone agrees: America is polarized, fractured and torn. There are conflicting currents, whether on fundamental social issues such as abortion rights, or on more hackneyed issues such as diversity programs in businesses and universities.

Since witnessing the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021, Adam Gray has continually documented current affairs in the United States, from the die-hard Trump supporters in Florida who continued to believe in his return when everyone else thought the former President’s political career was over, to the Mexican border where migrants come looking for a better life. As an independent photographer, he has covered all the topics and events that punctuate daily life in this big, complicated country. A country where different movements are at odds with each other, transforming the streets of Washington and New York with demonstrations of all kinds.
This exhibition takes us on a tour of these Dis-United States of America, a country that is constantly debating its origins, its foundations and what it should become. A journey that even takes us into the very heart of Trump’s fiefdom at Mar-a-Lago, where Adam Gray had the rare privilege of briefly having access to the most powerful – and most controversial – man on the planet.
