Ankara, Turkey, December 19, 2016. Russian ambassador Andrey Karlov shot dead by an off-duty Turkish police officer, Mevlüt Mert Altıntaş, while giving a speech at an art gallery. Altintas shouted “Allahu akbar!” In Turkish he then said: “Do not forget Aleppo. Do not forget Syria.” He was killed in a shootout with Turkish Special Forces. Russia and Turkey have supported opposing sides in the Syrian civil war, Russia backing forces loyal to the Syrian government and Turkey supporting certain rebel groups.
