With Yuri Kozyrev
With Yuri Kozyrev, we went away for the weekend. After all, there was no reason not to. In July, everyone goes away for the weekend. Being in Iraq wasn’t a reason not to go. And like everyone else, we took the south road. We thought it wasn’t hot enough in Bagdad: only 48° C. So we took the cars, the guards, our friends from Time and France 24 and we drove down the small roads leading to Amara and Bassorah. There at least, we knew what it meant to be hot: 60° C.
But don’t think that we spent our time sunbathing and watching the sea. Yuri took pictures while I worked on reports. And especially, there was pressure from Jean-François and Delphine in Paris. “Yuri, now you have to stop changing the pictures in your exhibit.” Then there were discussions with Yuri. “Do you think I should switch the 45 pan and the 14 in black and white?” Or “Lucas, the timeline for June has to be done and the texts 55 and 292 need to be reread.” More discussions with Yuri. Visa, life, death and hairstyles… That’s how Visa pour l’Image takes shapes too. In the back of an Iraqi army pickup. On a terrasse, in the evening, in Amara. On the banks of the Shatt-el-Arab, across from Iran. A weekend. But, I promise, a studious one. Bring on the welcome drink at Pams! Where sometimes it isn’t as hot…
